This article contains compelling evidence that the DOD has purposely refused to help Wikileaks redact documents and then lied about it to the American people in a deliberate effort to move public opinion in the government's favor. If this is the case, the government is just as culpable as Wikileaks (if not more so) for the release of informant names that took place during the Iraq/Afghan document dump this past summer.
What is even more disturbing is this legislation that has been brought before congress and sponsored by Senators Lieberman, Ensign and Brown.
Don't get me wrong, I believe that there SHOULD be a prohibition on the publishing of informant names. This is good...
HOWEVER, if the evidence in the article below is true, our government can simply refuse to redact documents while at the same time threatening prosecution if those documents are released in an effort to pursue and press charges against media organizations that release leaked information.
I say that this bill should contain language that makes it clear that the government has a moral obligation to cooperate with attempts to redact the names of informants.
IF this article is true, then it is shameful that these people, who have sacrificed so much to help the cause of the United States, can't count on our government to do EVERYTHING possible to protect them. Instead, these heroes are being used as pawns in a struggle to control the flow of information.
